Silver Spring Networks has been chosen to extend its wireless IPv6 network service for the Internet of Things (IoT) ‘Starfish’ in Stockholm, Sweden.
The smart grid solutions provider will expand its public cloud network, data service and internet protocol platform to upgrade Stockholm’s ageing systems.
The deal was announced last week at the Smart Cities Summit in London and as part of the deal, will deploy its IPv6 IoT platform to upgrade aging lighting infrastructure with intelligent street light controls in Sweden’s capital.
According to a release, the rollout forms a part of the European Union-funded GrowSmarter programme, which aims to deliver smart energy and mobility solutions to “Lighthouse cities” Stockholm, Barcelona and Cologne.

Eric Dresselhuys, executive vice president of global development, Silver Spring Networks, said: “We see great synergy between GrowSmarter’s programme goals and Silver Spring’s own vision of a horizontal platform helping to stimulate sustainable innovation within the constraints of city bureaucracy and governance.

Gustaf Landahl, head of Departments, City of Stockholm added: “Cities and the industry need to collaborate more closely together on innovation to break the status quo of silos and drive more horizontal-focused models.
“Through GrowSmarter’s programme and solutions such as those delivered by Silver Spring Networks, Stockholm is closer to meeting its larger sustainability and energy efficiency goals.”
Silver Spring Networks concluded by saying that the Starfish will arm commercial enterprises, cities, utilities and developers in Sweden with a means of two-way command and control, near-real time telemetry and industrial-grade security to every device.
IoT network deployment in the US
In related news, Silver Spring Networks was also selected by American Municipal Power (AMP) to help its member municipalities provide better customer experience and service for 60,000 electric and 30,000 water customers. [US utility selects Silver Spring for AMI connectivity]
AMP will also leverage Silver Spring’s SilverLink Control Platform and SilverLink Applications through Software-as-a-Service to help with rapid implementation, to minimise deployment risk, and to reduce the total cost of ownership.
AMP is a non-profit wholesale power supplier and services provider for 133 members in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, Maryland and Delaware.
