The Golden Valley Electric Association will use Silver Spring Networks’ communications technology to provide connectivity for smart meters and other grid devices.

In a combined statement, the solutions provider said it is providing the utility with its IPv6 communications technology for connectivity of the utility’s advanced metering infrastructure in Alaska.

Silver Spring Networks will start deploying its technology in Golden Valley Electric Association’s grid network as from June to provide connectivity to some 50,000 residential and business premises.

In total, Golden Valley Electric Association provides energy to some 100,000 consumers.

Cory Boregson, CEO of the utility company, said: “…we are investing in new technology that will help GVEA operate more efficiently and improve outage restoration. Our members will be able to monitor energy consumption more precisely and make more informed decisions to manage their electrical usage.

“Our mission is to provide our member-owners and communities with quality customer service.”

Craig Lawson, senior vice president of Silver Spring Networks in North America, added: “Access to two-way IoT connectivity platforms and solutions shouldn’t be limited by size, geography or climate. Our multi-application and standards-based approach allows us to provide the most flexibility and choice for our customers, while also delivering grid technology to modernise their infrastructure.”

Grid communications technology

The news comes a month after the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) partnered with Silver Spring Networks to improve the connectivity of its water and electricity distribution assets.

DEWA said it signed an agreement with the solutions provider for the supply and installation of the company’s IPv-6 radio frequency network for connectivity of smart grid assets including smart water and electric meters and distribution automation sensors.

Silver Spring claims that its technology will provide DEWA with a secure and reliable connectivity of its smart grid assets throughout Dubai.

DEWA is planning to use the network for the introduction of new services including smart city services in future.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of DEWA, said the partnership with Silver Spring Networks will help the utility achieve the objectives of its ‘Smart Applications through Smart Meters and Grids’ initiative, which enables DEWA to build a wide and integrated smart grid covering generation, transmission and distribution systems.
