Con Edison has awarded a contract to Smart Grid Solutions to install electric smart meters and gas smart modules.

The contract includes the creation and support of a communications network for territory-wide coverage using SGS’s ProFieldMETER technology.

The deal forms part of a larger plan to deploy advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) across Consolidated Edison Inc.’s service territory, which covers New York City and Westchester County, and Orange and Rockland’s service territory, which includes those two New York counties, as well as adjacent parts of northern New Jersey.

Approximately 3.9 million electric meters and 1.3 million gas meters will be deployed. [Con Edison signs new demand response programmes]

Shashi Gupta, CEO of SGS, added: “Being selected for the largest, most comprehensive smart grid project awarded since SGS introduced its innovative ProField technology cements its premier position in the smart grid industry.”

Con Edison energy efficiency

In other recent news, Con Edison also announced its partnership with US-based designer of energy efficiency programmes Franklin Energy to help customers reduce energy consumption and bills.

The Wisconsin-based solutions provider will help Con Edison deploy its energy efficiency programme, ‘Neighborhood’, in Brooklyn and Queens.

The two companies will install lighting solutions for utility’s 27,000 residential customers in the two New York state administrative divisions through to the end of 2017.

In addition to installing energy efficiency lighting technologies, Franklin Energy will also implement consumer awareness campaigns to increase customer knowledge on energy conservation.

The solutions provider claims that it will use its expertise in residential energy efficiency to help Con Edison customers lower their energy bills through energy management.

Greg Elcock, section manager of targeted demand management and energy efficiency at Con Edison, commented: “We’ve already started the process for this new program[me] and I am confident it will end with the results we, and our customers, are aiming for.”
