In the US state of California, the city of Roseville has selected Itron to modernise its water and electricity system.
The city of Roseville signed a five-year deal in which it will adopt Itron’s OpenWay Riva IoT solution to manage distributed water and energy resources in an efficient and costs-effective manner.
The contract includes the installation of 100,000 smart water and electric meters to automate the meter reading process and improve billing accuracy.
The smart meters will use an intelligent wireless network to remotely send consumer usage data.
Roseville will use Itron’s Total Outcomes which includes the provision of back-office IT infrastructure and cloud-based Software-as-a-Service applications such as meter data management and analytics.
The project will help the city improve conservation of its water and energy resources as demand continues to grow, as a result of increasing population and economic activities.
Roseville is confident the new system will help improve revenue collection through accurate billing, reduce operational and non-revenue costs through quick detection of leaks and energy theft and improve customer services by improving response time to power outages.
Philip McAvoy, assistant director, city of Roseville, said: “The new meters and communication network offer electric and water customers more control over their energy and water use while enhancing customer service.
“Upgrading our meters improves our air quality by reducing emissions while ensuring the City’s utility communication infrastructure is in place to adapt to changes in the water and electric industries.”

The project will enable the city to adopt additional applications such as Volt/Var optimisation, demand side management, theft detection, high impedance detection, transformer load management, and tools to manage distributed energy resources.
