Global provider of smart energy communications, Trilliant, announces the status of its smart meter rollout project in partnership with UK utility firm, British Gas.
In a press statement, the California-based smart energy communications provider said it has so far connected 4.2 million smart meter devices for British Gas and its customers.
The smart meter devices, which include smart gas and electric meters and in-home display units, are using Trilliant’s Smart Communications Platform to send usage data and receive orders from the utility firm.
Andy White, CEO of Trilliant, said: “The milestone effectively demonstrates the benefits that energy retailers and their customers can gain from an investment in advanced metering paired with clear motivation to change energy use patterns.”
In addition to improving energy efficiency, the smart meters project is helping British Gas optimise its revenue collection through accurate energy billing.
Trilliant claims its smart communications platform is based on open standards, hence will allow British Gas to integrate multiple smart grid applications now and in the future.
This means the utility firm will use the Trilliant solution instead of investing in new networks when the need to increase smart grid applications arises.
Smart energy communications
The news follows an announcement made by Trilliant and Siemens of their selection by Mexico’s state-owned electric utility, CFE, to deliver smart energy communications for distribution automation and Automated Metering Infrastructure.
The project is expected to help CFE modernise its grid network, reduce energy losses and improve its customer service by engaging consumers with energy choices.
The project falls under a global partnership agreement that provides Siemens access to the Trilliant Smart Communications Platform, which combined with Siemens digital grid offerings “provides a comprehensive solution to help utilities worldwide to modernise grid infrastructure and performance.” [German utility uses Trilliant module for smart grid pilot].
Trilliant’s multi-tier network, including both wide area and near area networking (WAN and NAN), will connect the CFE to 634,000 Siemens advanced meters across seven districts of Mexico City as well as providing communication with nearly 12,900 distribution transformers across more than 1,185 kilometers-circuit lines.
